Interview with Evanescent
Is there a story behind the name evanescent?
In the beginning of the year I was looking for a unique name for our magazine. I wanted it to be (of course) aesthetic and meaningful, so I chose evanescent. "evanescent is about the words we easily forget, the voices that are quickly ignored, and the hushed emotions that rapidly fade away. we are here to remember them" is what I would describe our magazine as!
Why did you decide to start a literary and arts magazine?
I decided to start a literary and arts magazine mainly for youth voices because I believe in sharing young talent and helping voices be heard through art. I love seeing other young people be able to showcase their skills, and I want to give teenagers the opportunity to share their writing and art, even if it won't be featured in our magazine, to be heard and seen.
What are some challenges you’ve overcome and how did you overcome them?
Some main challenges currently for our magazine are the number of submissions we have had (and are still ongoing) to review. Since our team is made up of young teenagers, we still have our own lives outside of evanescent. We have received over 2000+ submissions, and with the number of people reaching out, because they are waiting for a response from us, it is hard to keep up with some of the emails and decisions we are making for each submitter.
Do have any advice for teenagers wanting to start a literary and arts magazine?
The biggest piece of advice I can give for teenagers wanting to start a magazine is to plan first. Planning is most important because you want to be organized when you start, so try to get the forms, files, folders, social media, and other important things figured out before you publicly announce your magazine.
Can you describe your latest project, Summer Swiftie Showdown?
Rewrite The Stars Review emailed us in advance a couple of months before today, asking if we would like to collaborate with them and a few other magazines to host a Taylor Swift Writing Contest over the summer. We thought it was a fun opportunity to interact with other magazines, so we obviously joined in! Submissions are currently open, and people can submit prose and poetry related to or inspired by a Taylor Swift album!
Where do you see yourself taking evanescent in the next few years?
I hope to continue evanescent throughout my high school years, lifting up young voices as I get older. However, because of the amount of attention we have been receiving, I have been thinking about reducing the amount of times we will be publishing an issue a year.
What motivates you and inspires you to work?
Getting the issue out filled with beautiful writing and art from various writers and artists around the world is what motivates me the most. Also knowing how many people are interested in seeing our magazine as well as submitting to it inspires me to push more and help share art.
Is there anything you would’ve wanted to know earlier that you know now?
I wish I knew how much time I would have to contribute to this magazine. I wish I made more time for myself to focus on this project and doing other things in my life; so basically managing time well.
How did you grow so quickly, and do you have any tips for magazines struggling to grow or are just starting?
Social media is what helped evanescent grow. Actively posting and promoting your magazine through Instagram, TikTok, or any other social media platform will help your organization gain attention as well as grow.
